Command decision: we left the last leg of our Irish guided tour (missing Limerick), and opted to venture out on our own. I went online and reserved a 7 passenger van with room for 1 bag from the Dublin airport.
You know how they are described with those pictures that show the little stick figure people and the suitcase? I figured, ehhhhh, we were only traveling with 5 adults, 1 baby car seat and a couple pieces of luggage – that should work out…
Oh boy, was I WRONG!! I knew the cars were small, but for American standards, these were extra, extra small. I wish I had thought to take a picture – it was actually comical. There was no way we were all going to fit in and not have it look like a clown car.
If you are traveling with several people and/or kids, my piece of advice would be to take the number of people in your party and add at least 2 for the number of passengers. Then on top of that, add room for luggage.
We ended up having to rent two vehicles – a SUV and a small car. That was an unexpected hit to the budget!
Now in two vehicles, Adam and I were split up trying to navigate back to the rest of our group and I was the only one with GPS on my phone. This made it quite the feat trying to adjust to driving on the “wrong” side of the road, shifting with the opposite hand, and navigating through a foreign city all while trying not to lose your husband following behind you. At least we weren’t the person driving on the incorrect side of the road exiting the airport. Messing it up already…jeeez. I think we only made one wrong turn and maybe an extra loop or two on a roundabout (take advantage of those things!!). I call that a success!!
Now the real challenge….deciding who was going to ride where. Oh, the dilemma…..
I ended up driving with mom and dad – two very vocal navigators with differing opinions on how to get out of the city.
Read my next post to see where they take us!
Have you had any surprises with the size of cars in Europe? What about driving on the opposite side of the road?
